Our Home Security Tips

Thursday, November 12th, 2009
  1. When approaching your home, make certain you are alert to anything that appears suspicious.  If you suspect anything is wrong, leave the area at once.
  2. Make sure you have a peep hole installed on your front door, as well as an easy to use deadbolt system.
  3. Keep the exterior of your home well lit.
  4. Make sure the shrubbery against your home is thinned or pruned periodically to keep it from being a potential hiding place.
  5. Do Not depend on your automatic garage door closer to lock your garage.  Unless locked with a key or other secure method, overhead doors can easily be opened by an intruder.
  6. If you are a single woman living alone, avoid publishing your first name in the telephone directory, on bills and on your mail box.  Use an initial for your first name or consider adding a fictitious name to yours.
  7. When planning a trip, remember to stop the delivery of your mail and/or newspaper.  Ask friends and neighbors to drive by and check on your house while you are away.
  8. Buy a few timers or light sensitivity sockets that will help light your house at night when you aren’t there.
  9. When approaching your home after dark, do not fumble with your keys at the door.  Instead have your key ready in your hand so you can enter quickly.
  10. If you receive suspicious phone calls, hang up.  If the annoyance continues, contact the police and the telephone company.
  11. Do Not give out any personal information (ie: credit card numbers, social security number, bank account information, etc.) unless you originally initiate the call.  Even then be cautious with giving out personal information.
  12. When having your car serviced or valet  parked, lock your glove compartment and give the attendant only your valet key or necessary keys for your vehicle.  This prevents someone from making unauthorized copies of your other keys.  Remember your name and address in on your registration card in your glove compartment.

Effects of a Stun Gun and Are They Really Legal?

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009

What effects can I expect when using a stun gun on an assailant?

The most effective areas on the human body to target are between the neck and the hips. Where the neck and shoulder meets. Below the rib cage and The upper hip area. Not everyone reacts the same way. Some people may have some immunity to the shock, however most people will be strongly affected by the stun guns that output higher voltages.

  • Touching an assailant for less than one second will cause minor muscle contractions and have a repelling effect.
  • Touching an assailant for one to two seconds will cause muscle spasms and a dazed mental state.
  • Touching an assailant for three to five seconds will cause loss of balance and muscle control, total mental confusion, and disorientation leaving them dazed.
  • All effects to the assailant are temporary; the stun gun can cause no permanent harm.
  • Under no conditions can you ever suffer a charge back to your own body so you can feel safe using one even if the assailant is holding you.

Never leave your stun gun in the car or exposed to the elements for long periods of time. Extreme heat or cold will diminish the output of your batteries and may degrade the electronic components of your stun gun.If you have a rechargeable stun gun, do not keep it plugged in all the time, this will cause the battery to become weak and not keep it’s charge.  For battery operated stun guns, we recomment checking “your spark” often, and change the battery when the spark seems to be getting weak.

It is best to carry your stun gun with you and keep it at roughly room temperature to maximize its output, and for protection.

The use of stun guns for any purpose other than self-defense or law enforcement may constitute a crime under the law. The stun gun is not a firearm. Do not attempt to defend yourself against an armed attacker.

ALWAYS CHECK YOUR STATE AND LOCAL LAWS FOR ANY  SPECIFIC RESTRICTIONS:

Good Self Defense Items to Have for the Single Lady

Monday, June 1st, 2009

Single ladies need protection, just as anyone does, but maybe even more. There are many fine products on the market, and there are alternatives for folks who don’t want to carry a handgun. These are some fabulous products that can help a person in the area of self defense!

PEPPER SPRAY: There are many types and sizes, and they usually shoot a nice stream of liquid, directly into the face of an attacker. It will cause his eyes to burn, they will involuntarily close, and he won’t be able to see for a few minutes (maybe 10 to 30) and he will have difficulty breathing, will be coughing and choking, and pursuing you or your purse will suddenly be off of his mind as he is suffering, possibly vomiting too. The sprays do not cause long term harm, and some of them contain a special marking dye that may aid law enforcement in identifying the person later on. Pepper Sprays can also come in the form of Foam or a Gel, which will completely cover the assailant’s face, and the gel will stick like glue, and is more difficult to remove.

STUN GUN: These are battery operated devices that are about the size of a garage door opener or even smaller. They emit electricity, and when the button is pressed as you touch the assailant with the two little metal prongs, the stun gun delivers a huge amount of electricity into the body of the person, causing them to lose control of their muscles and it temporarily incapacitates them. They will usually fall to the ground, be unable to think or speak clearly for a few minutes, and certainly won’t be able to continue robbing you or whatever else they were intending on doing. There are no long term effects from this either. In fact, both the stun gun and the pepper spray are very humane ways to prevent an attack from continuing, but without harming the creep in the long term.

DOOR BRACE: Any gal that lives alone should have one of these. It is usually a long, collapsible piece of tubular metal that can extend to whatever length is needed, so that you can wedge it under the doorknob and down to the floor, on a door that opens inward into a home or apartment. This will prevent the door from being opened, even if someone were to somehow unlock the door. There are usually rubber pieces at both end to prevent slipping, and also to protect the door or floor from being scratched.

ELECTRONIC WHISTLE: This is another battery operated device that will emit a loud, sometimes ear-piercing sound when the button is pressed. They are usually small like a pen and can fit comfortably on a key chain, in a pocket or purse, or even worn on a lanyard around the neck. Electronic whistles are ideal for attracting attention from others IF you are in trouble.

So, there are several great self defense items, ideal for anyone to carry, but especially women. You can come into our store and talk to us about them, however, if  Steve’s Lock Out isn’t close to you, you can order them online from this great website: Mythril Security so hurry and order what you need, and BE SAFE!
